Primtionary

For those of you who don’t know, Primtionary is a game, similar to Pictionary, played with prims in Second Life. It was created in early 2004, by (I think) Jamie Otis in Mauve, and has been run on and off by different people in different locations ever since. My own involvement started as a sponsor, and later assisting Freya Becquerel in running her game at Zazi for about a year, before recently after a long break, restarting sessions in Zazi. Other games that I know of are run by Yummie Olsen’s group in Asim Zahra.

The basics of the game are as follows.

  • A volunteer will come to the stage and pick a difficulty level. These vary slightly between groups but are usually Easy, Medium, Hard and Evil, though Yummie’s group also has an Impossible level for those who feel masochistic enough to try it.
  • The volunteer is then given a word which he or she must try to build using basic prims. There are often restrictions such as, no textures, no sculpties, no pre-made shapes, no making letters to spell words and so on.There are also general conventions used in all (or most games).
  • The rest of the audience then attempts to guess the word being built.
  • The first person (allowing for chat-lag not mixing up the order) to guess will win a prize and the chance to be the next builder, choosing a difficulty and building the next word.
  • The game then continues while time allows.

There are a few variants and house rules, which are supplied at individual stages. These have included Themed Primtionary – where the audience tries to guess the theme behind the words, Extreme Primtionary – where all words are at the maximum difficulty level, and Scored Primtionary – where instead of each guess being paid, the highest score at the end gets a single prize.

Generally, to find out where and when Primtionary is being played, search for and join the Second Life group Primtionary Posse (free to join) where most if not all games are announced. At least, when group chat is working.
