FIC, griefing, piracy and teeth

It’s been an odd sort of week, which probably comes as no surprise to most of you since most weeks tend to be odd. Still, I thought people had stopped thinking about the FICness of things, and here it is again in the forums. It’s a great joke of course, like most conspiracy theories tend to be, but really I mean…

Anyway, I suppose in a way, the FIC does exist… though not how most of you will guess. The FIC (Furry, Fickle, Fictional, Friendly, Futuristic, or even Fetid Interstellar Corps) was a chat channel set up in Eve Online to welcome and assist new players visiting from SL. It’s usually empty these days.

Which brings me neatly to my next point really. Now, I don’t play Eve for the PvP aspect, and in fact would rather avoid it completely. There was a time once when you could do that by avoiding low-security space, but it’s not that easy these days. There are those who take up piracy because it’s fun, who will attack unarmed traders or even people with nothing worth stealing because it’s more fun to kill players than npcs.

Usually, a good setup against npcs for missions leaves you defenceless against other players, so effectively this is just griefing. More than that, it’s disheartening, depressing and will probably lead me to abandoning Eve as a source of entertainment in the near future. It’s started causing arguements between my friends and I, and a game isn’t worth losing friends for.

And now… I’ve lost a filling, big one too, so a huge gaping hole in one of my teeth. Grrr… why can’t life be simple and fun? I wonder if RL has a restart option.

What awaits us?

Where will we be in six months time, or even in a year? We get seemingly wild claims from LL and even wilder claims from others, but each has teir own agenda and neither covers the whole.

Sure, we might have Havok 9, 128 bit antialiasing at a nanopixel level and flexible torii, but will we have a world we can use? As many of you know, I’ve been around a while. When I started, I had a PII-350MHz PC with about 256MB RAM and a 64Mb GeForce 2MX. I got an average of about 15fps back then, antil an update crippled it. I upgraded as my finances allowed, movng to a PIII-866MHz with 512 RAM and a 128Mb GeForce 4Ti-4800 and got back up to 10fps.

Time passed, and I found myself with an Athlon XP 2600+ (overclocked) with 1GB RAM and a 256Mb GeForce FX5200. On the main grid, if I’m lucky, I can get 6 or 7 fps.  On the test grid, 2fps at best, usually a lot less… seconds per frame.

I’m not in the financial position to upgrade again, and it doesn’t look like I will be for a while, so I can imagine me not getting much in the way of performance over the next few months. Maybe I won’t log in so much, maybe I’ll just do less. It’s upsetting, but I guess time moves on, and not everyone can keep up.  Eventually, I’ll get sorted out, upgrade and be back.

What really annoys me is the fact that everyone seems to want to get money out of SL lately.  Way back, people made content, held events, all sorts and guess what… there was no way to convert L$ to real money, but people still did stuff. It must be that communist infiltration that some people constantly whine about… but OMG that means it’s been going on since the beginning!!! Now, people say that L$ will be worth less because LL will make… I see people saying that it’s no longer worth making stuff, people claiming SL will die cos all the content creators will leave…

Well, maybe some of the more money-grabbing capitalist low-lives will, but that’s not much loss really. People who still realise that it’s a game will still produce content, still hold events, whatever.

The sky is NOT falling, people…
